Ebbw Valley Brass Shine

Posted: 5th December 2025

An appreciative audience enjoyed a warm and atmospheric evening last night as Ebbw Valley Brass returned to the Clarence Hall with their Christmas Concert. The band presented a rich and varied programme that moved between carols, film favourites and seasonal arrangements, all delivered with their trademark precision.

The concert opened with Ben Hollings’ Festive Intrada, setting a bright and celebratory tone, followed by performances of Polar Express, Gaudete and a beautiful rendition of Candle of the Lord, featuring soloist Andrew Smith. John Barber’s witty arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Cha Cha Men brought smiles around the Hall.

We were delighted to welcome the St Mary’s Church in Wales Intergenerational Choir as special guests. Blending younger and older voices, the choir offered an uplifting set of songs which complemented the band’s programme — a highlight for many in the audience.

After the interval Ebbw Valley Brass returned with an energetic second half, including Santa Claustrophobia, Coventry Carol and a lively performance of When Santa Got Stuck Up the Chimney, featuring soloist Oliver Hodgkiss. The festive mood reached its peak with The Twelve Days of Christmas and Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s rousing Christmas Finale.

To close the evening, the band and choir came together for a joyful We Wish You a Merry Christmas, sending the audience home smiling and fully in the Christmas spirit.

A huge thank you to Ebbw Valley Brass, the St Mary’s Church in Wales Intergenerational Choir and everyone who joined us for this memorable night of seasonal music. It was a wonderful start to the festive season at the Clarence Hall — and we look forward to welcoming the band back again soon.
