Musical Tea
Posted: 25th July 2024Join the Friends of Brecknock Sinfonia at the Clarence Hall at 3.00 pm on Sunday, 20 October for a Musical Tea featuring Brecknock Sinfonia Cello Octet and Soprano, Áine Smith who will be performing Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras no 5, together with works by Boismortier and Piazzolla.
Áine Smith is a Welsh Soprano who began singing with the Nidus Children’s Choir, based in Cwmbran. With this group, she performed a number of times at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, and in 2015, competed in the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, winning a silver medal. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Merton College Oxford (2018-2021), graduating with a first-class degree. She then studied at the same institute for a postgraduate MSt in Musicology (October 2021-July 2022), where her research broadly concerns the musical body. She has held a choral scholarship with the Merton College Choir.
Áine Smith also sings with the Magdalen College Consort of Voices, and regularly performs with student-led ensembles, such as the Delius Singers and the Selene Consort. As a soloist, she began performing with New Chamber Opera as an undergraduate, singing Haydn’s La Vera Costanza in 2020. She has performed as a soloist on several occasions with violinist Rachel Podger in the Brecon Baroque Festival.
Áine Smith is a keen ambassador for access into higher education, and works through various platforms as a mentor for students from state-educated backgrounds aspiring to study Music at university. She is particularly eager to work in Tenebrae’s education programmes (since September 2022) to facilitate broader access into choral music and beyond.
