Memories of post-war Crickhowell

Posted: 11th May 2026

There was a warm and appreciative audience at the Clarence Hall on Sunday evening as Crickhowell District Archive Centre launched its latest publication, Post-war Crickhowell, 1945–1970.

Written by local authors Ryland Wallace and John Webb, the book explores the changing life of Crickhowell in the decades following the Second World War, combining broader social history with personal recollections, local stories and memories of everyday life.

The launch evening offered an opportunity not only to celebrate the publication itself but also to reflect on a period of enormous change for the town and its surrounding communities. Through readings, conversation and shared memories, the audience was taken back to a Crickhowell shaped by post-war rebuilding, changing traditions and evolving community life.

There was a strong sense throughout the evening of the affection both authors hold for the town and of the importance of preserving these stories for future generations. Many in the audience recognised familiar names, places and experiences within the book’s pages, adding to the atmosphere of shared history and connection.  We were delighted that the Clarence Hall featured, as shown below!
