Sharing the joy of music
Posted: 27th August 2026Founded in 2011, Cantorion Phoenix is a mixed choir that brings together people of all backgrounds and singing abilities. Under the leadership of Musical Director Dian Winter, the choir has flourished from a small group into a thriving and much-loved part of the local music scene, performing regularly in Crickhowell, Govilon and the surrounding area.
At its heart, Cantorion Phoenix is all about community. The choir’s mission is to give anyone who loves singing the chance to achieve a high standard of musicianship in an inclusive and supportive environment. There are no auditions, no requirement to read music and the choir welcomes individuals with diverse needs. For many members, Tuesday rehearsals are a highlight of the week, combining music with friendship and fun.
The choir also loves to give back. Each year, it stages concerts to raise funds for good causes, supporting charities and community organisations across the area. Alongside its concert programme, Cantorion Phoenix takes music out into the community through visits to local care homes, sharing the enjoyment of singing with residents who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience live performances.
Following its success at Abergavenny Eisteddfod earlier this year, the choir is now looking ahead to Cwmdu Eisteddfod, with members rehearsing a varied programme alongside preparations for another busy season of performances and community events.
New members are always welcome. If you enjoy singing uplifting music in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, come along to the Clarence Hall on Tuesday evenings during term time, 7.30–9.00pm. The Autumn Term begins on Tuesday, 8 September and there’s no obligation to join formally or take part in concerts. You can simply enjoy the weekly singing or perform whenever you wish.
