Clarence Hall Gems – No. 1
Posted: 25th April 2022The Clarence Hall is not only a lovely old building, but it is also a classic example of Victorian architecture and decor. Over the next few months, we’ll look at several of the “Clarence Hall Gems”, as we call them, courtesy of Hall Trustee and Director, David Jeremiah.
As the Hall is refurbished over the coming months every effort will be made to retain its unique character by way of removing, refurbishing and reinstating original fittings. To illustrate this lets first look first at this now dilapidated but essentially sound light fitting.
This lovely old lamp is currently hidden in plain sight on the gatepost of Clarence House. It is cast and wrought iron with glass windows and would originally have been gas lit. The original piping is still there. The intention is to refurbish it and incorporate it, and the pillar on which it stands, into the new side entrance to the Hall. It will be a delicate operation as parts of the structure are quite fragile but it is so lovely it would be unthinkable to send it to scrap.
There are other Clarence Hall Gems to follow, so watch this space…
