Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day
Posted: 25th April 2025This May, Crickhowell will join communities across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth to mark the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day. Together we honour the sacrifice of the millions who gave their lives during the Second World War, and celebrate 80 years of peace in Europe.
VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today, but a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have shaped our nation ever since. It’s a time to gather – in our streets, gardens, halls, clubs and homes – to reflect on the past and look with hope to a future founded on peace and understanding.
As part of the commemorations, Clarence Hall is hosting two special community events on Friday, 9 May. From 3pm to 5pm, everyone is invited to an Afternoon Tea, hosted in partnership with Crickhowell Volunteer Bureau. This free event is open to all, though booking is essential via the Volunteer Bureau on 01873 812177.
The celebrations continue into the evening with a VE Party at 7.30pm featuring live music from Universal Translators and Noted. Entry is free for all ages – a perfect opportunity to come together as a community in the spirit of joy, remembrance and celebration.
We are grateful to Crickhowell Town Council for their support for both events.
Crickhowell’s commemorations will conclude with a traditional-style Street Party on Sunday, 11 May from 2pm till late. Organised by residents and local businesses, the High Street will be closed from midday and transformed into a vibrant celebration of peace, unity and community. Everyone is invited to bring their own food, drink and chairs, with tables provided along the street, and to dress in 1940s vintage style if they wish. Music, children’s games and the return of the once-famous Tug of War promise an entertaining afternoon for all ages.
