Local theatre production brings Greek village to life!
Posted: 2nd October 2024The Clarence Hall is set to host an engaging theatre production this week, blending professional talent with local artistry into a unique experience. This performance, by Rareseed Productions, features a combination of drama and live music, promising audiences a memorable evening.
Directed by the talented Liz Pearce, who will also take on the role of “Old Mother,” the play is a fresh staging of Charles Way’s acclaimed work, The Long Way Home. Way, a distinguished playwright with a portfolio of over 40 internationally-produced plays, has penned a narrative that has previously charmed audiences in England and Wales. His latest play, The Vanishing Elephant, is currently gearing up for performances in Belfast and London, further showcasing his wide appeal.
The Long Way Home is set against the picturesque backdrop of Greece. It follows the journey of a recently widowed old woman as she travels from her late husband’s inland hometown to her home of origin, beside the sea. Along the way, she rescues a boy who has been cruelly tied up and brings him up as they traverse the island, encountering a host of colourful characters and situations.
The production will be staged in a cabaret-style setting, evoking the ambiance of a Greek taverna. Audience members will be seated at small tables, where they can enjoy drinks, bread, and olives, immersing themselves in the village atmosphere as the story unfolds around them.
The cast includes experienced actors who have worked together previously with the professional company Gwent Theatre and a mix of talented younger actors and musicians. Vibrant musical elements are provided by Antwn and Linda Owen Hicks, members of the Welsh folk band Carreg Lafar, who have adapted their traditional tunes to provide an original soundscape for the play’s lyrics. Their recent success at the National Eisteddfod in Pontypridd and Antwn’s accolade as “Welsh Learner of the Year 2024” highlight their contribution to the production.
With its poignant and humorous script, dynamic cast, and innovative presentation, this performance of The Long Way Home is set to offer a rich and evocative theatrical experience. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a captivating story and enjoy a delightful evening of theatre.
Performances at 7.30pm on Friday, 4 and Saturday, 5 October at the Clarence Hall, Crickhowell.
