May Meeting – Llangors Beaver Project

Posted: 21st April 2026

Crickhowell U3A’s May gathering offers a fascinating glimpse into one of the UK’s most remarkable wildlife stories, as members and visitors come together at Clarence Hall.

The meeting takes place on Tuesday 5 May, with doors open at 10.00am for a 10.30am start. This month’s speaker, Colin Preece, will explore the reintroduction of beavers into British waterways and the powerful environmental impact they are making.

Focusing on the population introduced to a pond and wetland area in Llangors  some 13 years ago, the talk will trace their journey from initial release to the thriving, dynamic habitat they have helped to create.

Beavers are often described as “ecosystem engineers”, and this illustrated talk will show why. Through dam-building and natural water management, they shape landscapes in ways that support biodiversity, improve water quality, and reduce flood risk. The Llangors project offers a compelling local example of how these animals can transform an environment over time.

This promises to be an engaging and informative session, ideal for anyone with an interest in wildlife, conservation, or the changing face of the British countryside.

Visitors are always welcome to come along and discover more about Crickhowell U3A’s varied programme of talks and activities.
