Tabea Debus to perform at Clarence Hall

The Clarence Hall is set to host a remarkable evening of music on Saturday, 22 February at 6.00pm, as internationally acclaimed recorder player Tabea Debus takes the stage.  Accompanying her on lute will be the outstanding Toby Carr, a Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

In this fascinating exploration of ear worms, Tabea and Toby will move from anonymous medieval dances to John Dowland and Henry Purcell and the contemporary Gareth Moorcraft’s “Diaries of the Early Worm”.

A world-class performer

Tabea Debus is one of the world’s leading recorder players, known for her mesmerising performances and innovative approach to early music. She has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician with prestigious ensembles such as La Serenissima and The English Concert, and in 2023 she joined the renowned recorder quartet Palisander.

Her impressive career has taken her to venues such as Wigmore Hall, major early music series in London, York and San Francisco, and festivals including Edinburgh International Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Musica Antiqua Bolzano. A familiar name to BBC Radio 3 listeners, she is a regular guest on In Tune and The Early Music Show, and has released seven solo albums to date.

Tabea’s talent has been recognised with numerous accolades, including the CAG/Richard S. Weinert Award for Innovation in Classical Music, the soloist prize at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and 1st prize at the Society of Recorder Players/Moeck International Solo Recorder Competition in London. She has been a City Music Foundation Artist, a Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) musician, and a Concert Artists Guild (CAG) artist in New York.

The perfect musical partnership

Toby Carr is one of the UK’s leading lutenists and has performed with the country’s foremost period instrument ensembles, symphony orchestras, opera companies and ballet productions. His career highlights include multiple tours with English Touring Opera, performances with the Royal Opera House orchestra for Handel’s Jepthah in 2023, and an appearance at the BBC Proms 2022 with La Nuova Musica.

As a sought-after chamber musician, Toby is a member of ensembles Ceruleo, Lux Musicae London and Ensemble Augelletti, and collaborates frequently with vocal groups Fieri Consort and Ensemble Pro Victoria. His work has been featured on numerous acclaimed recordings.
